Teletherapy: What It’s Like and How to Make It Work for You

Therapy from your home? In your favorite chair, with a cup of tea, and no commute? It’s more than just convenient — for many, teletherapy is a safe, effective, and deeply meaningful way to get support.

Here’s what you can expect — and how to get the most out of your virtual sessions.

What Is Teletherapy?

Teletherapy (or online therapy) is counseling delivered via secure video or phone. You meet with a licensed therapist using a HIPAA-compliant platform, typically from your home or private space.

Many therapists (like me!) now offer teletherapy as a primary way to connect with clients — especially those who:

  • Live in remote areas

  • Prefer not to commute

  • Have busy or inflexible schedules

  • Feel safer or more comfortable at home

  • Manage chronic illness, anxiety, or caregiving roles

Does It Really Work?

Yes — research shows that for many conditions (including anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress), teletherapy is as effective as in-person therapy. What matters most is the quality of the therapeutic relationship — and that can be built just as deeply online.

What You’ll Need

  • A private space where you can speak freely

  • A computer, tablet, or phone with a camera

  • A reliable internet connection

  • Headphones (optional, but helpful for privacy and focus)

Most clients quickly adapt — and many end up loving the flexibility.

Tips for Making It Work

  • Set the scene: Light a candle, grab tea, or use a blanket — create an environment that feels calming.

  • Minimize distractions: Silence notifications and ask housemates to give you space.

  • Be patient: If tech glitches happen, just take a breath — we’ll work through it together.

  • Let yourself show up fully: This is still your time. You deserve to feel heard and supported, even through a screen.

What If I Want to Try In-Person Later?

That’s okay too. If you’re local and want to explore in-person therapy in the future, I may be able to offer limited availability in my home office — just ask. We can always explore what feels right.
